For the first time in history, President of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, heads a Kurdish delegation to the 51st Security Conference in Munich, separately from Iraq.

The issue of autonomy of the Iraqi Kurdistan has stirred up much controversy in Baghdad.

During the Munich conference, one of the most notable remarks made were those of German President, Angela Merkel where she pledged military assistance to Baghdad in its struggle to fight back the ISIL militant group. But she didn’t mention the Iraqi Kurdistan as a separate party.

Although the issue of autonomy for the Iraqi Kurdistan region has been up for a while, President Barazani’s participation at the Munich Security Conference could be historic for Kurds. However, it should be considered that if the Iraqi Kurdistan is recognized as an autonomous region, then it could be the beginning of the fragmentation of the region; something that ISIL terrorists are after it and pose real threat to the regional peace and security and help spread of violence and terrorism.
