Before Khalij-e-Fars became operational the Surena FSU served as Iran's biggest offshore oil terminal. The new vessel further opens Iran's hands in reaching its international oil clients at sea. Iran’s total in-place oil reserves have been estimated at more than 560 billion barrels.
According to experts the vessel is capable of carrying more than 2.2 million barrels of crude oil with an output capacity of more than 31 thousand barrels per hour or one million barrels per day.
In an official ceremony held on land in the Bahregan peninsula at Bushehr province, the oil terminal officially started its work. The order was issued by the managing director of the Iranian offshore oil company via video conference as permission for pumping oil to a Japanese supertanker from crude extracted from the Soroush platform a few kilometers away. Head of the IOOC told reporters that the vessel became operational despite Unilateral US and EU sanctions against Iran's energy sector.
Even to the eyes of experts this gigantic vessel looks more like a floating Island rather than a ship. Kahlij-e-Fars or the Persian Gulf is the name of Iran's latest super tanker. The 364 meter ship serves as one of the biggest offshore oil export terminals in the world. The FSU or Floating Storage Unit is the result of a joint project by the Iranian offshore oil company and a consortium of South Korean companies.
