A homemade bomb explosion has hit the central part of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, as security officials have found two other bombs at the city’s airport.

The bomb went off on Tuesday near a busy square in Cairo, injuring two people.

“A small bomb hidden in a roadside electrical transformer went off, damaging the transformer,” a police officer said.

Officials also tightened security at the airport following the discovery of the two other bombs near the arrivals hall, which were successfully disarmed.

Security sources say authorities have launched an investigation to determine who planted the bombs. Airport security was reviewing video footage, they said.

Egypt has been rocked with numerous bomb attacks targeting soldiers and police since the army toppled President Mohamed Morsi, who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, in July 2013.

On January 29, some 44 people were killed and dozens of others injured in a series of militant attacks across the volatile Sinai region.

The so-called Ansar Bait al-Maqdis militant group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The Egyptian military considers the Sinai Peninsula a safe haven for gunmen, who use the region as a base for their “acts of terror.”
