The Chinese State Administration for Religious Affairs SARA hasreleased its work plan for 2015 confirming that Beijing intends toconsecrate new bishops without authorization from the Vatican or Pope
Francis.
For decades China has been putting pressure on the Vatican by
threatening a breakaway of independent Catholics, represented locally
by the CCPA, the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.Over 100 million Christians are estimated to live in the world’s mostpopulous nation today. However it is very hard to determine how many
of them are members of the CCPA.
China has indicated that the Vatican has to break off its relations
with Taiwan as a condition for the renewal of their diplomatic
relations.
Some media have reported that the Holy See is taking this option under
serious consideration however experts believe that an understanding is
still far to be reached.
There are practically no diplomatic relations between China and
Vatican City at the moment. Some Chinese media linked to the Communist
Party have warned that relations between the two nations would further
dim if Pope Francis meets with the Dalai Lama. The pontiff, however,
says he has plans to meet with the exiled Tibetan leader sometime in
the future.
