The UK’s shadow foreign secretary has criticized Prime Minister David Cameron, saying he has ruined the country’s position in Europe during his term in office, a report says.
“During his time in Downing Street David Cameron has done serious damage to Britain’s status in Europe and in turn has diminished our standing in the world,” Douglas Alexander said in a report published Tuesday by the British daily The Guardian.
Alexander is set to visit Paris for talks with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius as part of a plan to improve relations with European partners.
The shadow foreign secretary went on to say that prior to Cameron’s tenure Britain was very influential in EU decision making, but his term in office has witnessed “the most significant decline in British influence in Europe for a generation.”
“The re-election of David Cameron could mark a point of no return for Britain’s relations with the EU,” Alexander warned.
Alexander has promised that he would proceed with a key Labour foreign policy priority to “review, repair and reset” the UK’s relations with Europe if his party wins the general elections in May.
Earlier in January, Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, urged the nation to stick with his party in the upcoming general elections. In his video message for the New Year, he warned the people that voting for the Labour Party could trigger “chaos” in the country.
