Iran will not tolerate any hostile activity in Iraq’s Kurdistan: IRGC commander
A senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Iran will never tolerate any hostile activity on the territory of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.
Brigadier General Amanollah Gashtaspi, who leads the IRGC's Hamzeh Seyyed al-Shohada Headquarters in northwest Iran, said on Wednesday that the country has good relations with the Kurdistan government, but it will act decisively if the region shelters groups and individuals who operate against Iran.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has no problem with the (Kurdistan) Region, but the region must not allow its territory to be used against our country,” said Gashtaspi at a press conference held in the city of Urmia.
He said Iranian armed forces will not allow hostile groups to operate near the country's borders, adding that entities and governments in the region must also cease their support and cooperation with Iran's enemies, or face serious consequences.
The comments come months after US and Israeli officials admitted they had provided weapons and funding to Kurdish terrorists opposed to Iran during a joint US-Israeli war of aggression against the country that started in late February and ended as part of a ceasefire in mid-April.
The officials admitted the assistance had been given to the terrorists to instigate violence and insurgency in Iran during the aggression.
Iran has been tough on the slightest form of illegal armed activity near its borders, especially in Iraq's Kurdistan, where it has launched aerial attacks to annihilate terrorists and their hideouts.
In his briefing with reporters, Gashtaspi said the IRGC, in cooperation with the Iranian border guard force and police, has foiled attempts to transfer equipment and ammunition across the border into Iran with the purpose of creating insecurity inside the country.
“We will not allow the enemy to exploit the potential that exists in the border for transferring weapons and ammunition and undermining the country's security,” said the general, who commands IRGC units in two Iranian provinces of West Azerbaijan and Kurdistan.
He also appreciated Iranian citizens living in the country's border regions for their support for the country's stability and security.
