Telegram CEO info about ‘French involvement’ in Charlie Kirk murder seems ‘credible’

Telegram founder Pavel Durov

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, says that information about potential French involvement in the killing of controversial far-right US activist Charlie Kirk seems “highly credible.”

Durov’s comments were made in response to a statement by journalist Candace Owens, which was based on information reportedly obtained from a French official.

In a post on his social media platform X, Durov stated: "After analysing all of Charlie Kirk’s remarks about France and Macron, Candace’s information suggesting French involvement in Kirk’s death seems highly credible to me."

The Telegram founder asserted that Kirk’s calls to impose a 300% tariff on all imported goods from France could have been a motive for the assassination.

Kirk believed that the reversal of such measures was linked to the withdrawal of accusations previously made against Durov.

Kirk’s tweet from August read, “President Trump should announce plans for a 300% tariff on French wine unless ALL charges are dropped on Pavel Durov immediately. If Europe is going to imprison CEOs of platforms where free speech thrives, there should be stiff and painful consequences.”

Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on September 10 during a public appearance at a university in Utah.

A 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, is accused of carrying out the killing.

Durov’s tweet came just hours after Owens asserted that French President Emmanuel Macron and his spouse, Brigitte Macron, conspired to have her assassinated.

She stated that this information was provided by a “high-ranking employee of the French Government” two days earlier, and alleged that the Macrons had “executed upon and paid for my assassination.”

She went on to say, “This person claims that Charlie Kirk’s assassin trained with the French Legion 13th Brigade with multi-state involvement.”

“I have deemed the information they gave me to be credible enough to share publicly in the event that something happens,” Owens wrote on X.

She added that the attack would have involved France’s elite National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) and one Israeli operative.

Owens warned that French journalist Xavier Poussard, known for reporting on Brigitte Macron, could also be at risk.

“This is deadly serious. The head of state of France apparently wants us both dead and has authorised professional units to carry this out,” she wrote.

For years, Durov’s relationship with France has been rocky. The situation only got worse after his arrest in Paris last year. After his arrest in France, Durov was kept in the country for months.

While France claims the move was part of an ongoing probe into criminal activity on Telegram, Durov and his supporters have long viewed the criticism as politically motivated.

Kirk, the conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), had been reportedly frightened by the pro-Israeli forces before his assassination.

The Grayzone earlier reported that Kirk, 31, a staunch supporter of US President Donald Trump, had refused to accept money from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was frightened of reprisal by pro-Israel forces before his assassination.
