Hamas says Israel’s long-planned major ground offensive in Gaza City is part of the regime’s broader campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians and must be stopped immediately.
The Palestinian resistance group said in a statement that the offensive, launched before dawn on Tuesday, “is nothing but a new chapter in the genocide and systematic ethnic cleansing against our people in Gaza.”
Israel launched its offensive in Gaza City on Tuesday, conducting heavy air strikes overnight as its forces moved deeper into the city.
Thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee down a single coastal road to the center of the Strip, joining hundreds of thousands who have already fled.
Hamas warned that the offensive will further deteriorate the humanitarian catastrophe in the besieged coastal strip.
The resistance group said that the Trump administration is fully responsible for backing the regime of Benjamin Netanyahu’s crimes against humanity.
It said Netanyahu is committing the crimes “under the overt political and military cover of the US administration.”
The Palestinian group called on the international community to take responsible and decisive action to force the Israeli regime to end its genocidal war and lift the siege on Gaza.
Israel’s military invaded Gaza City hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio put the Trump administration’s full support behind Benjamin Netanyahu in a visit to al-Quds on Monday. Rubio said Washington’s priorities were the liberation of Israeli captives and the destruction of Hamas.
In a message on X, the Palestinian foreign ministry warned that Israel’s plans to occupy Gaza City involve the “deliberate targeting of civilians” and are turning the territory’s largest city into “a mass graveyard.”
Israel’s military said on Tuesday evening that it expects the offensive to take “several months” to complete.
“We will act until the war objectives are achieved. We are not limited by time,” said military spokesperson BG Effie Defrin.
Israeli military commanders, however, have expressed concern about the assault on Gaza City, warning that it could endanger the lives of the remaining captives held by Hamas and may be a “death trap” for the regime's forces.
