Israeli forces have killed a woman and wounded several other people when they opened fire on residents attempting to return home in a southern Lebanese town on Sunday, officials say.

According to the National News Agency of Lebanon (NNA), Israeli "occupation forces shot in the direction of Hula neighborhoods after residents entered, leading to the death of a woman and the wounding of other people."

"Three citizens were kidnapped by Israeli forces in the town," it added.

Shortly after the incident, Lebanon's army warned residents against heading to border areas.

It said in a message on X, the army warned about “the danger of unexploded ordnance left by the Israeli enemy, as well as the possibility of the presence of enemy forces in those areas.”

A fragile truce deal reached between Israel and Hezbollah in November stipulated that Israeli forces must leave Lebanon before January 26. But after Israel missed the deadline, the two sides agreed to extend it to February 18.

Hours before they agreed to the extension on Jan. 27, the regime’s forces opened fire on residents seeking to enter villages still occupied by the military forces, killing more than 26 people, according to Lebanese authorities.

This week, Israel’s military spokesman Avichay Adraee warned people against heading south in a message on X, saying that the Israeli forces are "still deployed on the ground."

A US official overseeing the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah said Friday that the regime’s forces would by next week withdraw from occupied towns in southern Lebanon.

But Lebanon's Parliament speaker Nabih Berri said that US officials had told him that Israel intended to remain in five areas inside Lebanese territory, a request that Berri said Beirut had firmly rejected.

Lebanon’s government reiterated that Israel must completely withdraw from the country when the deadline for its pullout elapses on Feb. 18.
