Typhoon Vamco lashes Philippines, paralyzes parts of Manila
Torrential rains from Typhoon Vamco lashed provinces in the Philippines' main Luzon Island on Wednesday, November 11, killing at least one person and paralyzing parts of the capital, Manila, as some residents awaited rescue by boat due to rising flood waters.
Vamco, the 21st cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, battered a nation still reeling from Goni, the world's most powerful typhoon this year that killed 25 people and destroyed thousands of homes early in November.
In Marikina City, one of the suburbs of Metro Manila, residents waded through floodwater, some with their pets, and sought shelter on higher grounds due to flash floods from an overflowing river. Rescue teams were dispatched to evacuate residents stuck on top of their homes.
Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said 40,000 homes had been either fully or partially submerged in the area. Flights and mass transit in Manila were suspended while the coast guard stopped port operations.
Vamco has since weakened, with sustained winds of 130 kilometers (81 miles) per hour as it moves across Luzon. It is forecast to head toward Vietnam next.
