Iran edges Mexico in FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup opener

The Iranian men's national beach soccer team has defeated Mexico in the preliminary round of the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Beach Soccer World Cup in the Bahamas.

The Iranians recorded a narrow victory at the Nassau Stadium of the capital Nassau, beating the green-clad Mexican outfit 3-2 in their opening Group B fixture.

 Iranian goalkeeper Peyman Hosseini scored the first goal of the tournament, and Amirhossein Akbari and Mohammad Ahmadzadeh scored the other two goals for Team Melli Football Saheli.

Defender Benjamín Jesús Mosco Méndez and 29-year-old forward José Ramón Maldonado Alonso were the scorers of the Mexico national beach soccer team, nicknamed El Tricolor. 

The 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which is the ninth edition of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, kicked off in Nassau, the Bahamas, on April 27, and will wrap up on May 7. Portugal is the defending champion.

The hosts, Ecuador, Senegal and Switzerland are drawn in Group A. Iran is pitted against Italy, Mexico and Nigeria in Group B. Panama, Paraguay, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates shape Group C. Group D consists of Brazil, Japan, Poland and Tahiti.
