Cluster bomb constrovery

The United Kingdom says it will not provide internationally-banned cluster munitions to Ukraine in its war with Russia. Sunak made the comments in an address to reporters. Spain has also followed suit, saying that certain weapons and bombs cannot be delivered under any circumstances. Germany has opposed sending cluster munitions to Ukraine as well. On Friday, the US said it will send Ukraine the widely banned weapons to help in its counteroffensive against Russia. It says Kiev has provided written assurances that the weapons will be used carefully to minimize any risk to civilians. Russia has slammed Washington's move, saying that the decision is an act of desperation which displays weakness. Cluster munitions are banned by over 100 countries.

Palestinians' plight

Mourners have held a funeral for a 24-year-old Palestinian man killed on Friday during a demonstration against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The young man identified as Abdel Jawad Hamdan Saleh was killed in the village of Umm Safa near Ramallah. The village has been the scene of attacks by settlers in recent months. Israeli forces also killed two other Palestinians during a raid on the city of Nablus on Friday. Israel has intensified its deadly crackdown across the occupied territories this year. Just days ago, the Israeli military launched a deadly offensive in city of Jenin, killing a dozen Palestinians and injuring scores more. An EU envoy on Palestine has criticized Israel over the proportionality of the force it used. The UN Chief Antonio Guterresh condemned the attack on the camp, calling it the worst violence in the West Bank in many years.

France protest ban

French demonstrators take to streets in Paris to denounce police brutality in defiance of a protest ban. The demonstration was called by the family of Adama Traore, a Black Frenchman who died in police custody in 2016. Protesters called for an end to institutional racism in the country. The French police have banned demonstrations on Saturday over risks to public order citing a "context of tensions". Protesters say that ban is unacceptable. Rallies have been held since June 27 when a police officer fatally shot 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk at a traffic stop in a Parisian suburb. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says more than 3,600 people, mostly teenagers, have been arrested. On Friday, a UN committee called on France to address the structural and systemic causes of racial discrimination, including in law enforcement.
