Hamas hails approval of UN resolution on Palestinians' right to self-determination

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has welcomed an overwhelming vote in favor of a recent UN resolution supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem in a statement on Sunday hailed the position of the countries that supported the resolution with an overwhelming majority vote at a recent session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

He stressed that such support vindicated further the isolation of the US administration that “insisted on standing against the Palestinian rights and the international will.”

The remarks come after the world body voted overwhelmingly to approve a draft resolution, introduced on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in favor of Palestinians' self-determination.

Despite opposition by the US and Israel, the proposal on Friday in the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee was approved by a recorded vote of 158 in favor to 6 against with 10 abstentions.

The UNGA resolution emphasized “the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to their independent State of Palestine” and “stressed the urgency of achieving without delay an end to the Israeli occupation.

By the text, the Assembly would reaffirm the right of the Palestinian people to an independent state, urging all countries and specialized UN agencies to support them in the early realization of the right to self‑determination.

Elsewhere in the Sunday statement, the Hamas spokesman called for an end to the Israeli occupation and pledged resistance until the final victory against the regime.

Qasem reiterated the Palestinian people’s right to liberate their land, return to their homes and areas they were expelled from, and establish their independent Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital.

The developments come as Palestinian homes, lands and properties continue to be seized and destroyed by Israeli forces on a daily bases.

Palestinian resistance groups say time has come for the world community to implement United Nations resolutions and support the International Criminal Court (ICC)'s investigation into crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territory, in order to move toward justice for innocent Palestinian victims.
