Hundreds of Kurds and pro-Kurdish protesters gathered outside the US Consulate in Thessaloniki on Thursday to protest the US withdrawal from northern Syria and Turkey's military operations in the area.

Earlier in the day, police reportedly detained 12 people who held a protest at the birthplace of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.

On Thursday, US Vice President Mike Pence announced a five-day ceasefire in Turkey's military offensive, dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring,' which began on October 9, mere days after the White House announced a withdrawal of US troops from the area.

Ankara said the aim of the offensive was to create a safe zone cleared of Kurdish groups.
