Recognizing Palestinian state

A growing number of countries are officially recognizing Palestine as an independent state, amid mounting international outrage over Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The UK has now formally recognized Palestine as a sovereign state. Australia also made its formal recognition of Palestine, in a joint statement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Canada also followed suit, with a similar declaration from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office. France and Portugal are also among the list of some ten countries that were expected to take similar steps, ahead of the UN General Assembly. With these latest recognitions, the total number of countries that have recognized Palestine as a sovereign state will exceed 150. The recognitions, however, have been described by many as symbolic. Critics argue that such moves from countries that are financially and militarily backing Israel is a tactic to maintain their support while appearing to side with international public opinion.

Israel Gaza onslaught

The Israeli regime relentlessly continues its genocide in Gaza, with its attacks being focused on Gaza City. At least 71 Palestinians have been killed, including five aid seekers, in the past 24 hours alone. A three-year-old child also died in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis due to malnutrition and lack of treatment brought about by Israel’s siege on the Strip. Meanwhile, a group of residential buildings in Gaza City were targeted by multiple strikes overnight. Dozens are feared trapped under the rubble. Since the regime began its genocidal war in October 2023, at least 65,280 people have been killed.

Dismissing Trump threats

The Taliban have firmly rejected a call from the US President to reclaim Afghanistan's Bagram Air Base four years after America’s chaotic withdrawal from the country. Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid dismissed Donald Trump’s demand, urging Washington to adopt a policy of “realism and rationality.” He emphasized that Afghanistan’s independence and territorial integrity has been a consistent red line in all bilateral negotiations. This came on the heels of Donald Trump’s recent threats directed at the Taliban, warning of unspecified punishment if they refuse to relinquish the airbase. Bagram Air Base, once the epicenter of America's military operations in Afghanistan, was abandoned chaotically by the US and NATO troops in July 2021.
