Trump's personal attorney Giuliani tests positive for coronavirus

US President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani has tested positive for the coronavirus, Trump announced on Twitter Sunday.

The former New York mayor, 76, is the latest in a list of close Trump associates, who were affected by the disease that has killed over 280,000 Americans so far.

He was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center on Sunday for treatment, two people who were aware of his condition told USA TODAY.

It is yet not clear how Giuliani became infected, but he appeared on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" show to call for the Georgia State Legislature to overturn the results of the disputed November 3 presidential election in favor of Trump an hour before his diagnosis was announced.

Within the last week, Giuliani has made multiple public appearances, during none of which wore a mask.

He recently traveled to three battleground states of Arizona, Georgia and Michigan which Trump’s Democratic rival Joe Biden won to make his case.

On Thursday, he attended a hearing at the Georgia Capitol without wearing a mask. A day earlier, he was at a legislative session in Michigan, where he lobbied Republicans to overturn the results of the election, but again was not wearing a mask.

Images from both events show Giuliani speaking in close proximity to others and many of the lawmakers present at the Georgia hearing ignored social distancing guidelines and spoke to subjects without masks.

“Mayor Giuliani tested negative twice immediately preceding his trip to Arizona, Michigan, and Georgia,” the Trump campaign said. “The Mayor did not experience any symptoms or test positive for COVID-19 until more than 48 hours after his return.”

However, a person in contact with Giuliani said he began feeling ill late this past week.

Meanwhile, Jenna Ellis, an attorney who is also representing the Trump campaign in its election challenges, tweeted that the Trump legal team will continue “to fight for election integrity.”

Giuliani has been spearheading Trump’s fight through a flurry of lawsuits. Both Trump and Giuliani have repeatedly said that the outcome was marred by widespread fraud.
