Algeria protests

Algerians have massed for the 10th week of protests demanding the departure of the ruling class in the North African country. The protesters in the capital Algiers took aim at the brother of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. They accused the ex-president’s brother of being the leader of gangs and called for his trial. Anti-government protests, which began in February, forced the 82-year-old Bouteflika to resign earlier this month. Bouteflika had been seeking a fifth term in office. A presidential election has now been set for July 4 to choose his successor. The protesters say they want the removal of his entire inner circle from power.

EU workers protest

Thousands of trade union members have staged protest outside the European Union headquarters in Brussels for better work conditions. Union delegates from many of the 28 EU nations gathered for the peaceful march in the EU capital, demanding better working conditions and protection. The protesters say the current EU labor law is in favor of employers and businesses, and NOT the workers. The protest is held ahead of next month’s European elections.

Jailed Nigerian cleric

A team of doctors has been allowed to carry out an assessment of the health conditions of Nigeria's jailed Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky. The assessment has been led by the Islamic Human Rights Commission. The UK-based NGO hopes that the assessment will result in a full investigation into Zakzaky’s situation. The cleric has been in jail since 2015 when the army launched a violent attack on his residence in the city of Zaria. The cleric and his wife were injured in the attack, while two of his sons and hundreds of his supporters lost their lives. The Nigerian government refuses to release the cleric although a court has ruled that his detention without charge is illegal.
