Libya conflict

Libya’s Western-backed government has condemned an airstrike that hit the yard of a school on the southern outskirts of the capital Tripoli. Saturday’s air raid has raised concerns about civilian casualties of the ongoing fighting near Tripoli. Eastern forces loyal to Saudi-backed strongman Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive on Tripoli earlier this month. The advancing forces have been confronted by the Government of National Accord which is now calling for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of the general’s forces. According to the UN, dozens have been killed and thousands have been forced to leave their homes in Tripoli since the start of the fighting.

Albania clashes

In Albania’s capital, supporters of the opposition party have clashed with police during an anti-government protest in front of the Parliament building. Thousands of protesters showed up at Tirana's main boulevard, holding anti-government posters, chanting slogans and throwing flares and firecrackers at police. They called for the government's resignation and early parliamentary elections. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters. Speaking during the rallies in Tirana, opposition leader Lulzim Basha urged supporters to keep up daily demonstrations.

France protests

France's Yellow Vests have held protests for the 22nd consecutive week despite repressive new laws and bans. Polls say the government's so-called "National Debate" has been received very poorly. Ramin Mazaheri has more on this story.

Sudan unrest

Sudan’s transitional military council has been sworn in, two days after the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir. The head of the country’s rapid support forces General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo was appointed deputy head of the council on Saturday. Meanwhile, the party of Sudan’s ousted president has slammed the military’s power grab as unconstitutional. It called on the army to release its members. Earlier, the new head of the ruling military council, in an address, pledged a civilian government in Sudan.

Venezuela rally

The Venezuelan president has accused the opposition of trying to divide the nation and staging a coup. Maduro was speaking to members of Venezuela’s civilian militia on the anniversary of a failed coup against former president Hugo Chavez. The president also ordered an expansion of the militia that was established to complement the armed forces. In January, opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself the country’s interim president, triggering a political turmoil. He described Maduro’s 2018 re-election as illegitimate and called on the military to abandon him. Oil-rich Venezuela is grappling with an economic crisis marked by hyperinflation, power cuts and shortages of food items. The opposition blames Maduro for the deepening crisis but the president and his supporters put the blame on sanctions imposed by the US.

Trump controversial video

US President Donald Trump’s attack on a Muslim congresswoman with a video post on twitter has provoked a storm of angry reactions from fellow Democrats. Several Democratic presidential candidates, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, have slammed Trump’s attack on Minnesota Representative, Ilhan Omar as disgusting. Sanders says Omar should not back down to Trump’s racism and hate. Warren has accused Trump of inciting violence against a sitting congresswoman and Muslim Americans based on their religion. Other lawmakers have warned that such measures fuel Islamophobia and endanger Omar’s safety. Trump’s Friday tweet features a clip of Omar's speech and combines it with footage from 9/11 attacks. The post is captioned "We will never forget”. In her speech, Ilhan described 9/11 as "Some people did something."
