On October 29, the Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah appointed Sheikh Naim Qassem as its new leader, succeeding Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, who led the Movement for over 30 years. Nasrallah was martyred on September 27 during an Israeli airstrike that demolished several residential buildings in Beirut's southern suburbs. Sheikh Qassem assumes leadership in the wake of the recent martyrdom of Seyyed Hashem Safieddine, a prominent Hezbollah figure initially seen as a potential successor to Nasrallah.
