Bahrainis call for release of Wefaq leader
Bahraini protesters have rallied to demand the immediate release of prominent opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman. Protesters gathered for a peaceful rally in Diraz village on the two-hundredth day of Salman’s detention. Salman was given a four-year sentence in mid-June over charges of inciting disobedience and hatred. The protesters also called for the release of other political prisoners held in Bahraini jails. Protests have been ongoing in Bahrain since 20-11, demanding real reforms, including a constitutional monarchy and a more representative government. The al-Khalifah regime has instead harshly cracked down on dissent, which has led to scores of deaths and the detention of thousands of others.
