But the surviving Russian co-pilot denies the claim. Murakhtin says he did NOT violate Turkish airspace even for a second since he knows the area very well from previous missions. The other Russian pilot was shot out of sky by anti-Damascus militants. Ankara says it was only defending its own security, but Moscow regards the action as a planned provocation.

A Russian pilot who survived the downing of his jet says he received no warnings from the Turkish Air Force. Turkey releases an audio of the apparent warning.

A Russian diplomat says the Syrian army has rescued one of the two pilots from the fighter jet downed by Turkey. Russia's ambassador to France says after the pilot managed to escape, he was picked up by Syrian government forces. The Kremlin had already confirmed the death of one of its pilots. However, earlier, the Turkmen militant group fighting the Syrian government claimed to have killed both Russian pilots. As tensions are soaring between Ankara and Moscow, the Russian military says the guided missile cruiser, Moskva, is set to be stationed near Latakia, on Syria’s Mediterranean border. It’s warning that the shooting down would have "the gravest consequences".

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has held a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart after Turkey downed a Russian warplane near the country’s border with Syria. Zarif expressed concerns over the downing of the jet and said such incidents result in the escalation of tensions in Syria and send a wrong message to terrorist groups. He also said what happened to the Russian warplane shows the importance of Syria’s fate in fighting terrorism and maintaining peace in the world. The top Iranian diplomat further stressed that tackling terrorism is only possible with regional and international unification.
