310 Hajj pilgrims killed, hundreds injured in stampede near Mecca
The annual Hajj pilgrimage has become tragic once again. At least 310 people have been crushed to death and hundreds injured in a stampede in Saudi Arabia.
Civil Defense officials say the stampede took place in the plains of Mina near the holy city of Mecca. It’s not clear what triggered the deadly incident. The Hajj ceremony has seen several fatal stampedes in the past decades. The deadliest one occurred in 1990 when more than 1400 people were trampled to death near Mecca. This is the second major tragedy during this year’s Hajj. Less than two weeks ago, a crane crashed into the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing 118 pilgrims and injuring nearly 400 others.
