Iran calls for immediate repatriation of pilgrims killed in Hajj stampede
Tehran has called for the immediate repatriation of the bodies of Iranian pilgrims who were killed in a Hajj stampede in Saudi Arabia last week. Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called on Saudi officials to determine the fate of the pilgrims who went missing in the tragic incident. He said Riyadh is expected to speed up efforts in this regard. Amir-Abdollahian said a delegation, headed by the Iranian health minister, is currently holding talks with Saudi officials. Iran’s Emergency Services has announced that seven pilgrims, injured in the stampede, and 18 others, who fell ill during Hajj, have been transferred to the country.

An Iranian official says the casualties from Hajj stampede in Saudi Arabia have risen to 4700. Head of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Saeed Ohadi added that the number of the Iranian pilgrims killed in the catastrophic incident stands at two hundred and twenty eight. He said Tehran expects the number of Iranian victims to go higher. Latest figures by Saudi Arabia’s health ministry, however, put the number of deaths at 769.
