Bulgaria's Holy Synod: Flow of Muslim refugees threatens Christianity
Bulgaria’s Orthodox Church has called on the government NOT to let any Muslim refugees cross the country's borders. The Holy Synod said in a statement that accepting Muslim asylum seekers threatens Christianity and changes the ethnic balance in the country. It added that the flow of refugees puts the existence of Bulgaria at risk as a state. According to Sofia’s Ministry of Interior, Muslims constitute nearly 13 percent of the country’s population. Hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers, most of them fleeing war and hardship in the Middle East and North Africa, have tried to seek refuge in European countries.
