ICRC: Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike ‘at immediate risk of death’
A Palestinian prisoner who’s been on hunger strike in an Israeli jail is at immediate risk of death.
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned about Mohammed Allaan's critical condition after he abstained from food for fifty days as a protest against prison conditions. Allaan is now hospitalized. The ICRC called on Israeli officials to allow his family to visit him after more than four months. On July 30, Israel's parliament approved a law allowing hunger striking prisoners who are facing death to be force fed. The law sparked criticism from rights groups as a disrespect to the detainees’ choices. Palestinians in Israeli prisons regularly go on hunger strike to protest Tel Aviv’s administrative detention and medical negligence.
