The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has confirmed the largest theft to date, totaling $6.3 billion.

Binance announced on Friday it was working to resolve a "complex attack" against its accounts in what has been described as the biggest ever cryptocurrency heist to date.

The company said investigations had "uncovered additional points of breach", contrary to initial findings that suggested the complex cyberattack involved a single compromised laptop.

"This was a complex attack, and we are doing all we can in coordination with law enforcement to resolve it," Binance wrote on X.

Binance confirmed on its X account for Latin America that "the total estimated impact is around $6.3 billion."

The theft is four times the amount impacted in the biggest-ever cyberattack of its kind to date.

In February last year, $1.5 billion was stolen from the Bybit platform.

Following the release of the news, the prices of all major cryptocurrencies fell in world markets.

Top cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum plunged nearly five percent and nearly six percent, respectively. Binance token BNB fell nearly 10 percent.

The hacking of Binance comes as many financial experts express concern that the speed of advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating serious security risks for cryptocurrency platforms.

Binance was founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao. It was initially based in China, then moved to Japan, subsequently left Japan for Malta, and now has no official company headquarters.
