Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran and Oman should strengthen diplomatic consultations and expand constructive engagement to promote regional peace and stability.
Pezeshkian made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman on Sunday, hailing the sultan and the Omani government for their efforts to strengthen peace and stability in the region.
He emphasized the importance of drawing on the shared capacities of regional countries to foster greater understanding and cooperation inviting the Omani sultan to visit Tehran.
Pointing to the longstanding friendly relations between Tehran and Muscat, the Iranian president expressed hope that the two sides would meet in person in Tehran in the near future.
For his part, the Omani Sultan reaffirmed Muscat’s commitment to promoting peace and stability across the region, saying close communication and consultations with Iran are among priorities for his country.
He thanked Pezeshkian for the invitation and expressed hope that he would be able to visit Tehran at an appropriate time.
Oman has long served as the intermediary between Washington and Tehran. In the months leading up to the US-Israeli aggression against Iran early this year, Muscat was the primary venue for indirect US-Iran negotiations.
On February 27, just hours before the US-Israeli strikes began, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi publicly said on CBS that a deal was “within our reach.” The talks were widely seen as having made significant progress before the strikes derailed them.
After the war, Washington, frustrated by Muscat’s refusal to sever its channel with Tehran, sidelined Oman as the primary mediator and instead backed Pakistan as the lead negotiator, with Qatar also playing a role.
Despite this, Oman remained engaged. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Muscat in July 2026 to discuss mechanisms for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
