Araghchi, Ukrainian counterpart discuss dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss maintaining communication channels and resolving differences through peaceful means.
The meeting focused on continued dialogue between Tehran and Kyiv amid political differences and ongoing bilateral tensions.
Both sides emphasized the importance of keeping diplomatic channels open and pursuing peaceful means to address their differences.
“Our conversation focused on joint steps aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions between our countries,” Sybiha wrote on X.

Diplomacy means maintaining direct and open dialogue even under difficult and challenging circumstances, he added.
According to Sybiha, the two sides also exchanged views on developments in West Asia and Europe, as well as ongoing peace efforts.
The meeting marked the ministers’ second talks since a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea.
The Anna, a privately owned Iranian merchant ship carrying a cargo of rolled steel, came under a Ukrainian drone attack in the Caspian Sea on July 25 while traveling from Russia’s Astrakhan to Iran’s Bandar Anzali.
The incident killed one Iranian sailor and injured another, prompting Tehran to condemn the attack and demand compensation from Kiev over the incident.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on August 10 that Ukraine had failed to convince Tehran that the strike was unintentional.
He stressed that Ukraine “must certainly compensate” Iran for the attack and warned that Tehran would take action itself if Kiev failed to do so.
