In tonight’s Spotlight, we examine a significant development in West Asia, where regional efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States are increasingly converging with growing resistance to US secondary sanctions on Iran.
Qatar’s prime minister is in Tehran for talks on de-escalation and dialogue, as well as a proposed phased maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Russia says it will work with Iran and other countries to counter Washington’s secondary sanctions.
So, are regional countries beginning to take greater control of their own security and economic interests? Can Russia, China and other powers prevent Washington from turning unilateral sanctions into a global policy? And are we witnessing the emergence of a regional and international order less susceptible to US pressure?
