Iran’s main human rights body has condemned international inaction in dealing with crimes of aggression against children, as it draws global attention to dozens of innocent children killed during recent acts of aggression against the country by the United States and the Israeli regime.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Iran’s Human Rights Council said that the international community has mostly kept silent or has selectively treated crimes of aggression against children in conflicts around the world.
The statement was issued a week before the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, which falls on June 4.
"Every year, June 4 serves as a test of the sincerity of international human rights institutions. The truth is that silence in the face of the killing of children is not neutrality, but complicity in crime. The international community must now, before it is too late, align its legal rhetoric with its practical conduct," said the statement.
It said that Iranian children have been victims of proxy terrorist acts or direct aggression over the past five decades, adding that United Nations rights institutions have mostly kept silent or remained indifferent toward those crimes.
The Iranian rights body said that aggression against Iranian children intensified in the past two years, with two rounds of US-Israeli aggression on the country that killed or injured tens of children.
The statement said the attacks on Iranian children, including a deadly airstrike on a school in southern Iran on February 18 that killed more than 160 children and staff, is "a clear war crime under Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court."
It said aggressors against Iran have flagrantly violated Paragraph 4 of the 1974 Declaration, which obligates states to protect children from destruction caused by war.
The statement said that the Israeli regime and certain Western governments have also funded and assisted terrorist attacks in Iran over the past 48 years that have killed innocent children.
It also called on the international community to hold the Israeli regime and its military commanders responsible for numerous crimes committed against children in Palestine and elsewhere.
