Border guards seize cache of weapons, ammo in southeast Iran after ambushing terrorists

Iranian border guards seized a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials after ambushing terrorists in the southeast of the country, a senior border commander said.

The commander of Iran’s Border Guard Police, Brigadier General Ali Akbar Javidan, announced the news on Thursday, adding that the confrontation between border guards and terrorist elements occurred near the southeastern border city of Zabol in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

“In line with controlling and monitoring the southeastern borders of the country, and based on received reports regarding movements by regional smugglers to bring in explosive and suicide equipment, the matter was placed seriously on the agenda of the border guards,” he said.

“Accordingly, a team of border guards from the Zabol Border Regiment was dispatched to the designated location under direct operational guidance. After carrying out hours of targeted ambush, they observed several border violators carrying smuggled cargo who intended to illegally enter our country’s territory. Action was taken to arrest them, and ultimately the smugglers - who had been caught off guard by the presence of the border guards - abandoned their cargo and fled the scene,” General Javidan further noted.

The commander added that, after inspecting the site, border guards discovered a backpack containing a suicide vest, three kilograms of explosive compounds, three homemade detonators, 200 pellets, two and a half meters of electrical wire, a Kalashnikov rifle, a magazine, and 43 rounds of live ammunition.

Javidan said intelligence measures are ongoing to arrest those involved in the case, adding that these terrorists had intended to transfer the explosive shipment to central parts of the country for acts of sabotage but failed to achieve their “sinister objectives.”

The commander of Iran’s Border Guard Police also emphasized that the operation once again demonstrated the intelligence and operational capabilities, firm determination, and round-the-clock efforts of the Sistan and Baluchestan Border Guard in safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and preventing any threats from entering the soil of “dear Iran.”
