Two students have been killed and nine others critically injured in a shooting at Brown University, prompting a campus-wide lockdown and a manhunt for the suspect.

Exams were underway on Saturday when an active shooter entered the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island, United States.

The university issued its first emergency alert around 4:22 pm local time (21:22 GMT), warning of a gunman near the Barus and Holley engineering and physics building.

“Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself,” the university said in the update.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the initial casualties at a news conference: “I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon, and there are another eight in critical status, though stable, at Rhode Island Hospital.”

“Those are the only injuries or casualties that we know at this time but, as I mentioned, and it is important to remind folks, these numbers may change. We are still in the early hours,” he added.

A few hours later, the number of injured rose to nine, Smiley said, including one more victim who had left the scene and later discovered they had sustained non-life-threatening wounds from gunfire.

Rhode Island authorities said the suspect is still at large. He is described as a man dressed in black who fled the campus on foot, and no weapons have been recovered so far.

Smiley declined to identify the victims, stressing that the investigation is ongoing. He reassured the community even as a shelter-in-place order remained in effect for Brown University and the surrounding neighborhood.

Saturday’s shooting marks the second major gun violence incident on a US university campus this week.

On Tuesday, a shooter opened fire at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, killing one student and leaving another critically injured.
