Majid Majidi wins special prize at first Open Eurasian Film Awards

Renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi (C) wins the special award of the inaugural Open Eurasian Film Award during a ceremony in Moscow on November 27, 2025.

Renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi has received the special award of the inaugural Open Eurasian Film Award for his outstanding contribution to world cinema.

The ceremony was held on Thursday in Moscow with the attendance of Russia’s Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova, presidential aide Vladimir Rostislavovich Medinsky, and Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali.

Founder of the Eurasia Film Academy Nikita Mikhalkov praised Majidi’s cinematic work and presented him with the festival’s special award and the “Diamond Butterfly” trophy.

In his acceptance speech, the prominent Iranian director said children and adolescents have been central to most of his works.

Majidi honored the memory of the oppressed children of Gaza and expressed hope for a “world filled with peace and tranquility” for all children affected by war.

Before the award was presented, the hall screened scenes from Majidi’s films, including Muhammad: The Messenger of God (2015). The clips were accompanied by Iranian music, and the audience responded with a prolonged standing ovation.

The festival’s top "Diamond Butterfly" and the financial prize estimated at one million dollars, flew to China for the film "Against the Current" directed by Xu Zheng.

Majid Majidi, born in Tehran in 1959, is one of Iran’s most lauded film directors, producers and screenwriters.

Majidi earned global recognition with his 1997 film Children of Heaven — the first Iranian film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

He followed with critically acclaimed works such as The Color of Paradise (1999) and Baran (2001), establishing a reputation for poetic, humanistic storytelling.

Over decades, Majidi’s films have explored themes of childhood, poverty, faith and resilience, earning widespread international awards and securing him a central place in modern Iranian cinema.
