Amid all the pageantry and ceremony and defying every prediction, Catherine Connolly was officially sworn in as Ireland's 10th president at Dublin Castle on November 11, 2025.
Throughout her campaign, she faced attacks from government aligned candidates, who accused her of being overly critical of the European Union and the United States for what she described as their complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza.
We were led to believe that it was too great a leap, that our ideas were too far out, too left, at odds with the prevailing narrative.

Despite efforts by the political establishment to smear her, the former parliamentarian and lawyer from Galway secured a landslide victory.
Crowds gathered along Dublin streets to witness the ceremony, many saying her courage and principles set her apart from the rest.
I suppose, she stands up for minority groups, how she recognizes rights and isn't afraid to stand up for Palestine and say that injustice is going on in the world.
So, so that's the main thing that stood out for me about her.

Now she's president she has an opportunity to speak up and be recognized for the people. I mean, we're Irish, we were oppressed; she is speaking out for the Palestinians, they're oppressed. That's it.

Connolly has long condemned Washington's political and military backing of Israel's genocide in Gaza, criticism that resonates deeply among her supporters.
But how do American visitors here in Dublin view her stance?
I can understand if she holds some criticisms against our current policies and politics.

Ireland's new president has also been outspoken about the European Union's growing militarization at a time when millions across the block face financial hardship.
Her presidency is due to last seven years. Connolly's role is largely ceremonial, but analysts say she now possesses a great deal of soft power.
That means she can continue to champion the Palestinian cause, mainly through speeches, the events she holds, and, the people she hosts.
