WHO says ready to scale up health support following Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it stands ready to scale up its support in Gaza following a ceasefire deal between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
In a post on his X account on Thursday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the Hamas-Israel ceasefire, which was reached in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh with the purpose of ending Israel’s two-year war of genocide on the Gaza Strip.

"I welcome POTUS' (US President Donald Trump's) announcement about the ceasefire in Gaza and hostage release — it is indeed a big step towards lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians," Ghebreyesus said.
He expressed hope that "all parties will respect the agreement," which will end civilian suffering and bring captives home.
"WHO stands ready to scale up its work to meet the dire health needs of patients across Gaza, and to support rehabilitation of the destroyed health system," the world body’s chief emphasized.
In a statement early Thursday, Hamas announced the deal, which “stipulates ending the war on Gaza, the withdrawal of the occupation from it, and the entry of aid” as well as the exchange of the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza with Palestinian prisoners. The 20-point plan is based on a proposal forwarded by the US president.
Trump also announced the ceasefire in a post on social media, saying Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire deal.
Since October 2023, Israeli forces have killed 67,183 Palestinian people, most of them women and children.
Israel has sealed all border crossings, blocking the entry of humanitarian aid and further deepening Gaza’s already dire humanitarian crisis since March 2, when the regime violated its ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
