Israeli forces have opened fire at a group of Palestinians seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza, killing at least four people, medical sources said, as hospitals in the besieged territory record more deaths from famine and malnutrition.
The official Palestinian WAFA news agency, citing the sources, reported that Israeli troops directly targeted the civilians in the central Wadi Gaza area on Saturday. Several others were wounded in the shootout as well.
The development comes as more than 1,000 Palestinians seeking aid have been killed by Israeli forces near aid distribution sites run by the so-called US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which launched operations in late May.
The GHF has received considerable criticism from the UN and other humanitarian organizations for its failure to supply adequate aid and for the critical security situation at and around its aid distribution points.
Aid organizations and health authorities caution about a significant increase in starvation, especially affecting children and the elderly.
In spite of increasing demands, the assistance flowing into Gaza is still significantly lower than what is necessary.
According to the UN, Gaza needs at least 500 to 600 aid trucks per day to meet basic humanitarian needs.
Also on Saturday, Israeli air strikes struck a United Nations school that was providing shelter for displaced Palestinians in Gaza City.
A multistory residential structure was bombed and subsequently destroyed in Gaza City.
Israel has been destroying the high-rise buildings in Gaza City, leveling entire blocks that previously accommodated thousands of residents.
The Palestinian Civil Defense reported that a minimum of 50 multistory buildings have been demolished in recent weeks as Israeli forces intensify their attack on the city, coinciding with a surge in forced displacements.
Certain neighborhoods have experienced almost complete devastation. In the Zeitoun region of Gaza City alone, over 1,500 homes and structures have been obliterated since the beginning of August, resulting in sections of the area being devoid of any standing buildings.
The Israeli military has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since October 7, 2023, dismissing international appeals for a ceasefire, resulting in the deaths of at least 64,756 Palestinians, predominantly women and children.
The unrelenting airstrikes have ravaged the region and caused significant food shortages.
