Washington DC marks slave Emancipation Day as racial gaps endure

In 1862 Washington DC became the first city in the United States to proclaim a mass liberation for its many Black slaves.

Known as “Emancipation Day”, the local holiday is also a chance to examine the enormous gaps in racial equality which still persist throughout the country.
