Thousands of Pakistanis have taken to the streets of Lahore in a massive protest led by Jamaat-e-Islami (JIP), the country’s largest politico-religious party, against Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza.

An estimated 15,000 people attended the demonstration on Friday.

Addressing the crowds, the party’s head Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman called on all Muslim nations to announce a holy war to defend Palestinians in Gaza.

The protesters held anti-Israel banners and shouted slogans against the US complicity in the genocide in Gaza.

The participants called on the Pakistani government and Muslim leaders to stand united against the Israeli regime.

Pakistan maintains no diplomatic ties with Israel and has consistently called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Top UN and international humanitarian officials are calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza. They say the Israeli atrocities are threatening the existence of the Palestinian people.

Israel has been bombarding Gaza after around two months of relative respite. Since the regime ended the ceasefire there, over 1,500 Palestinians have been killed.

Local authorities say most Palestinians in Gaza have been displaced from their homes, and many are living in makeshift shelters.

With tens of billions of dollars in arms supplied by the United States, Israel has killed more than 50,800 people, the majority of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023.
