Detained Gaza doctor Hussam Abu Safia ‘suffered torture’ at Israel’s notorious prison: lawyer

Detained director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr Hussam Abu Safia, has been shown in shackles in a video on Israeli media.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the Palestinian director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, spent two weeks in the notorious Israeli detention center of Sde Taiman, his lawyer says.

The revered Palestinian figure endured torture, mistreatment, and hours of interrogation, according to Ghayd Qassem.

“From the moment of his arrest, Dr. Hussam Abu Safia was transferred to Sde Teiman detention center and placed in isolation for 14 days.”

Qassem made the remarks while giving an update after visiting Abu Safia in the Ofer Prison.

“He is being held in Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah, and has undergone harsh interrogations.”

Despite his health issues, she said, Israeli authorities failed to fabricate a realistic charge against him. Abu Safia is being held under the “unlawful combatant” law. He is denied his basic rights, his lawyer said.

“During interrogations, he was subjected to abuse, torture, and brutal assaults.”

“He was unaware of his mother’s passing and asked whether his martyred son’s body had been transferred from the hospital for burial.”

Abu Safia was forcibly taken away in December by Israeli troops following his heroic resistance in the face of the regime’s aggression.

He was among those taken for questioning over alleged links to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

The Israeli regime back then acknowledged that it raided the area of the hospital and took away at least 240 staffers.

The whereabouts of Abu Safia and other hospital staff had remained unclear.

Several reports have previously revealed details about killing, torture, sexual assaults, and other violations against Palestinians in Sde Teiman.

Two Palestinians who were earlier released from Sde Teiman said they saw Abu Safia there.

Abu Safia’s 15-year-old son, Ibrahim, was killed in an Israeli drone strike at the hospital entrance in late October 2024.

The killing of his son was a big personal setback for him but he stood tall.

His dedication to his patients cemented his place as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and defiance against the Israeli genocide and apartheid.

International humanitarian agencies say the Israeli attacks on hospitals, ambulances, and health care personnel were a key tactic in the genocidal campaign in the besieged Palestinian territory.
