Residents of the South Korean city of Pocheon have strongly demanded an immediate end to the US-South Korea war games after at least 15 people were wounded and multiple buildings destroyed in the city as war planes "abnormally" bombed civilian infrastructure during the exercise.

Pocheon, located in South Korea’s Gyeonggi province and near the heavily militarized border with North Korea, was hit by a 222-kg US made MK82 bomb on Thursday.

The bomb damaged multiple buildings, including a church, and wounded 15 locals, two of whom are in critical condition.

The South Korean Air Force has claimed that the town was hit after a bomb dropped from a fighter jet accidentally landed outside the maneuvers’ shooting grounds.

Residents in the area have protested about the disturbance and potential danger from nearby training grounds for years.

This is not the first time South Korean civilians have been harmed due to joint war games with the United States.

During a US-South Korea military exercise in 2010, multiple artillery shells were launched at North Korean territorial waters. The shelling sparked a retaliatory attack from North Korea which left 4 South Koreans, both civilian and military, dead and injured 22 others.

Pyongyang sees the joint South Korea-US military drills as a rehearsal for an invasion.

The United States military has been holding regular military maneuvers with South Korea ever since the end of the Korean War, which took place between 1950 and 1953.

The US currently has over 24,000 military stationed in South Korea.
