Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has made a donation of 40 billion rials (more than $950,000) to a charity that focuses on gathering financial support for the release of needy prisoners convicted of unintentional offences.
The non-governmental and non-profit organization launches appeals every year during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan to raise funds and pay Diyyah (blood money) for the release of prisoners, who are serving sentences in unintentional cases.
The event brings together officials and benevolent donors annually, and takes place in the capital Tehran and various cities across the country.
In Islamic Sharia law, Diyyah refers to the financial compensation given to the victim or the victim's heirs in instances of murder, physical injury, or damaged property. This form of compensation serves as an alternative to Qisas, which entails equal retribution.
Ramadan, recognized as the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, represents a profoundly significant period for Muslims. It serves as a time for reflection, spiritual dedication, and the remembrance of God. Among the essential practices during this sacred month are caring for the less fortunate and providing assistance to those in need.
