Iran’s parliament speaker, foreign minister meet Hezbollah chief in Beirut

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf (C) and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) meet with the secretary general of Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah, Sheikh Naim Qassem, in Beirut, February 25, 2025.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have held talks with the secretary general of Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah in Beirut.

Lebanon’s al-Manar media outlet reported on Wednesday that Qalibaf and Araghchi met with Sheikh Naim Qassem before leaving Lebanon.

Mojtaba Amani, Iran’s ambassador to Beirut, also attended the meeting.

The Iranian officials and the Hezbollah leader exchanged views on the latest developments in Lebanon and the broader region.

Qalibaf and Araghchi were in Lebanon to attend the funeral ceremony of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the long-time leader of Hezbollah, and the chief of the resistance movement’s Executive Council, Sayyed Hashim Safieddine, which was held in the Lebanese capital on Sunday.

At the funeral ceremony, Sheikh Naim Qassem hailed Nasrallah’s contributions to the Palestinian cause.

“We will continue Sayyed Nasrallah’s path, even if we are all killed and even if our homes are destroyed over our heads.”

In a speech delivered during a session of the Iranian Majlis (Parliament) on Tuesday, Qalibaf said the massive and historic funeral ceremony reflected the movement’s strength and popularity.

“Hezbollah is an integral part of Lebanon’s national strength and a guarantor of the country’s security and territorial integrity,” the Iranian official stated.

Israel assassinated Nasrallah in southern Beirut on September 27, 2024, following the regime’s bombing campaign that hit many areas from the country’s south to the capital. Safieddine was also assassinated in an Israeli attack on October 3, 2024.

Hezbollah postponed funeral ceremonies for both leaders due to fears of Israeli attacks on the ceremony.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, who was also in Beirut on Sunday, said the participation of a high-ranking Iranian delegation at the funeral procession demonstrates Tehran’s position in solidarity with the Resistance Front.
