Israeli airstrike kills civilian in south Lebanon in fresh violation of ceasefire

The photo shows the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike against the coastal city of Sidon in Lebanon on February 17, 2025.

An Israeli airstrike on a car in Sidon, a coastal city in southern Lebanon, killed one civilian and injured three others.

Official Lebanese sources reported the development on Monday, identifying the target as an alleged official with the Gaza-based resistance movement Hamas.

However, initial reports from Lebanese authorities indicate that the attack caused human losses only among civilians.

Citing a “security source,” Israeli Army Radio also claimed the target was a Hamas official in Lebanon.

The Israeli military, though, has not provided any further details on the specific individual, who was purportedly targeted.

A Lebanese security source confirmed the incident, noting that the airstrike took place near the sea in Sidon.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement condemned the attack, calling it a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and an escalation of the Israeli regime’s aggressive military actions against the country.

The Israeli attack has raised further concerns over escalating tensions between the regime, Lebanon, and Palestinian factions operating in the region.

The Israeli military frequently targets individuals or infrastructure it claims are linked to Hamas, which it considers to be a “terrorist organization” due to its determined defense of Gaza in the face of mounting deadly Israeli violence.

However, such strikes often result in civilian casualties, drawing widespread international condemnation.

The Lebanese government as well as human rights organizations have repeatedly slammed Tel Aviv’s incendiary tactics, which they say violate the international law by targeting non-combatants.

The attack on Sidon came no less than two days after an Israeli drone attack on a vehicle in southern Lebanon claimed the lives of three Lebanese civilians and injured at least four women.

According to Lebanese media reports, the aggression targeted the vehicle on the Jarjouh road in the Iqlim al-Tuffah, using a “precision-guided missile.”

The regime claimed the assault had targeted a senior Hezbollah commander, an allegation that has been denied by local sources who confirmed that none of the victims were the movement’s fighters.

This act of aggression adds to a litany of Israeli violations since a ceasefire agreement came into effect in November 2024, following more than a year of escalated Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

The year-long Israeli aggression against Lebanon killed more than 3,000 people, including Hezbollah fighters and leaders such as the movement’s revered former secretary general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

The ceasefire agreement mandated the Israeli military’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon within 60 days, a deadline extended to February 18 due to the regime’s non-compliance.

Hezbollah, whose incessant and successful retaliatory strikes during the one-year-plus-long escalation forced the regime into approving the ceasefire accord, has vowed to defend the Lebanese sovereignty against further aggression and warned that Tel Aviv’s continued violations would be met with an appropriate response.

The recent strikes followed a protest by Lebanese people in the capital Beirut against Israeli contraventions of the agreement.

Addressing the rally that had been invited by Hezbollah, Mahmoud Qamati, Deputy Head of the movement’s Political Council, said, “The resistance will continue to pursue the withdrawal of the enemy from southern Lebanon and will not accept any official stance that extends the enemy’s presence on our land.”
