A group of people in the United Kingdom are planning to lodge a complaint against the British Petroleum Company (BP) for its supply of crude oil to the Israeli regime.
The group, mostly people of Palestinian origin who have suffered vast losses as a result of the Israeli war in Gaza, sent a letter to BP to announce they are taking legal action against the company for running a pipeline that supplies much of Israel’s crude oil, the Guardian said in a report on Monday.
They said the oil supplied by BP through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline has been critical for Israel’s military operation in Gaza, including for its planes that drop munitions on the Palestinian territory.
The oil supplied by Azerbaijan via the pipeline, which runs through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and then delivered to Israeli refineries by ship, is responsible for 28% of the regime’s oil demand, including the supply needed for producing jet fuel used by Israeli fighter jets.
“Israel relies heavily on crude oil and refined petroleum imports to run its large fleet of fighter jets, tanks and other military vehicles and operations, as well as the bulldozers implicated in clearing Palestinian homes and olive groves to make way for unlawful Israeli settlements,” the letter said.
It added BP has violated international rules on business and human rights, as well as its own principles, by delivering oil to Israel while reiterating that Israel has been convicted of committing war crimes and genocide in Gaza, where it has killed more than 45,000 people since October 2023.
The letter asked BP to immediately cease supply and facilitation of oil supply to Israel through the pipeline and admit liability and a commitment to mediation for assessing damages. It asked the company, however, that any case on the claims is heard in a British court as both BP and the claimants are based in England.
