An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has killed one person, the Lebanese health ministry says, as the Tel Aviv regime continues to violate a fragile ceasefire agreement.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said that “an Israeli enemy drone strike on the town of Ainata killed one person and wounded another.”
Lebanon's al-Mayadeen television network also confirmed the killing, adding that four soldiers were also wounded after two Israeli missiles targeted a vehicle near a Lebanese Army checkpoint in Bint Jbeil.
On Saturday, Israeli aerial aggression also killed six people in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has already urged the international community to take decisive action to stop Israel’s repeated violations of a ceasefire reached between Tel Aviv and Beirut.
Since the ceasefire was implemented on November 27, Lebanon has documented dozens of violations, amid hopes of an end to the 14 months of aggression by Israel.
The ceasefire stipulates that Israeli forces are to gradually withdraw south of the Blue Line, a temporary line drawn after the withdrawal of Israel from the country’s territory in 2000, while the Lebanese army is expected to deploy its troops in southern Lebanon within a maximum of 60 days.
However, Israel has not yet withdrawn completely from southern Lebanese towns, warning residents against returning home amid ongoing air raids, drone strikes, and artillery bombardments, which have resulted in dozens of shells fired and multiple detonation operations, averaging three to four incidents each day.
According to Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA), UN peacekeepers found the body of a man “in the vicinity of his house” in the border town of Khiam after they entered there on Wednesday to inspect the road and verify the Israeli enemy army’s withdrawal.
Meanwhile, al-Mayadeen also reported that the Lebanese Army is set to begin deploying in its forward positions in the towns of al-Khiam, Ain Arab, and Hammams.
Equipped with bulldozers, these teams will advance into northern al-Khiam to clear roads, examine missile debris and unexploded ordnance, and verify the withdrawal of Israeli forces before deploying the remaining army units, the report added.
The occupying regime was forced to accept the truce with the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement after suffering heavy losses on the battleground and failing to achieve its goals in its aggression on Lebanon.
Lebanese health authorities report that since October 2023, over 4,000 people have died and more than 16,500 been injured due to Israeli attacks, with over 1 million others displaced.
