Jalili holds ‘cordial meeting’ with president-elect Pezeshkian

Saeed Jalili (L), who had contested Iran’s run-off presidential election alongside Masoud Pezeshkian, meets with the latter following his victory in the race, at Pezeshkian’s office in Tehran on July 6, 2024.

Former lead nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, who had contested Iran’s run-off presidential election alongside ex-health minister Masoud Pezeshkian, has met with the latter following his victory in the race.

The meeting took place at Pezeshkian’s office in Tehran on Saturday.

The “cordial” occasion saw Jalili felicitating Pezehkian again, and presenting him with his views concerning the country’s most important issues and the potential means of their resolution.

For his part, Pezeshkian noted that “mere [devising of] plans do not guarantee [one’s] success in [various] issues,” considering such success to rather depend on enlisting the services of the people who are specialist, inclined towards knowledge, and believe in endeavor.

Concluding his remarks, the president-elect expressed his readiness to receive Jalili’s viewpoints and proposals.

The run-off, which was held throughout the country earlier in the day, saw Pezeshkian receiving upwards of 16 million votes against Jalili, who secured more than 13 million out of over 30 million votes cast.

The contest followed an inconclusive first round on June 28 that was held to find a successor to president Ebrahim Raeisi, who lost his life alongside his foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran on May 19.

Also on Saturday, Pezeshkian delivered his first public address since victory, pledging to deliver on his campaign promises.

“I have not made any false promises in this election. I have not said anything, which I would not be able to act on tomorrow and turns out to be a lie later,” Pezeshkian said.

Defining some of his plans, Pezeshkian said he would seek to advance dialog, convergence, and national consensus, and vowed to address the country’s problems in all economic, social, cultural, and political areas.
