Three wounded in knife attack at railway station in Paris

Three people were wounded during a knife attack at Paris’s Gare de Lyon railway station, one of the biggest railway stations in the city.

At approximately 8 am (0700 GMT) on Saturday, an individual believed to be of Italian nationality was observed engaging in indiscriminate slashing of individuals at the railway station, located in the eastern part of the French capital.

The attacker, who has now been arrested, was described as a 32-year-old man, born in Mali, who “presented Italian identity papers,” said an investigating source.

According to the police, the motives behind the attack were unclear, which left one person with serious injuries while two others were lightly wounded.

“He was found to have an Italian driving license on him, and did not offer any motive for his actions. There were no slogans shouted,” the authorities said.

The most seriously injured person was in a “life-threatening situation and in intensive care,” said an emergency services spokesman.

“One person was seriously hurt, and two lightly wounded,” said a police spokesman.

The area between halls one and three was temporarily inaccessible, rail operator SNCF said on X, formerly Twitter.

Paris has witnessed a series of knife attacks occurring in public areas recently. In December, three tourists were subjected to stabbing incidents near the Eiffel Tower, tragically resulting in the death of one of them.

In January 2023, six individuals sustained injuries following a stabbing incident at the renowned Gare du Nord, one of the seven large mainline railway station termini in the capital city.
