Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the numerous criminal cases lodged against former US president Donald Trump as "politically-motivated persecution" on behalf of his Democratic rivals, which exposes the corrupt political system prevalent in the United States.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum gathering in Vladivostok on Tuesday, Putin said the numerous court cases filed by US judicial authorities against Trump were political revenge by his rivals which showed the existing fundamental corruption rooted in US politics.
“As for Trump, for us what is happening in today’s conditions, in my opinion, is good because it shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others democracy," Putin said.
Trump, who is the frontrunner Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential elections, is stuck in a mire of criminal cases lodged against him. Among other things, he is charged with making an attempt to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Biden.
“Everything that is happening with Trump is the persecution of a political rival for political reasons. That’s what it is. And this is being done in front of the public of the United States and the whole world,” the Russian leader added.
Trump, who used to claim to have good relations with the Russian president, has vowed to end the Ukraine war if re-elected.
“We hear Mr. Trump say he will solve pressing problems in a few days, including the Ukrainian crisis. Well, this cannot but bring happiness. This is good,” Putin said.
Meanwhile, Pertinent to Putin's argument, on Tuesday, the GOP speaker of the Republican-led House of Representatives gave the go-ahead for an impeachment investigation into US President Joe Biden.
Democratic lawmakers have denounced the Republicans' move as an attempt to take revenge against Biden, who is a Democrat, for the double impeachment of Trump in 2017 and 2019 during the latter's presidency.
