Iran’s FM Amir-Abdollahian arrives in Syria to discuss regional, international developments

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has arrived in Syria to hold talks with the Arab country’s senior officials on the latest regional and international developments, also discussing ways to further strengthen relations between Tehran and Damascus.

Amir-Abdollahian’s plane landed in Damascus International Airport on Wednesday, with the top Iranian diplomat saying the trip would see bilateral negotiations taking place between the two countries' officials on the recent regional and international issues.

“Given the fresh developments in the region, we are witnessing a new and positive chapter in the relations in the region,” Amir-Abdollahian told reporters upon arrival in Damascus.

“During my latest trip to Saudi Arabia, I received positive statements from Saudi officials regarding Syria. Today I am in Damascus to have talks about these remarks as well as bilateral, regional and international issues,” he added.

Hours earlier, Amir-Abdollahian announced in a post on his X social media account that he had departed for Syria to expedite implementation of the agreements earlier reached between the two countries’ presidents.

Amir-Abdollahian also said his trip was aimed at strengthening the policy of neighborliness in the region, underlining Iran’s focus on the establishment of stability and peace in Syria.

“Within the framework of strengthening the policy of neighborliness in the region and in order to speed up the implementation of the agreements [reached] between the presidents of the two countries, I am leaving for Damascus,” he wrote.

He said he will consult with top Syrian officials about the latest regional and international developments, adding, “Iran insists on the necessity of establishing stability and peace in Syrian and maintaining its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Iran's Raeisi, Syria's Assad ink long-term strategic cooperation agreement

Tehran and Damascus have inked documents to enhance long-term cooperation.

Back in May, Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad signed 15 documents in  Damascus to expand cooperation between the two countries.

In addition to the strategic cooperation agreement, the two presidents inked 14 other documents in various areas, including trade, oil and energy, engineering, housing, rail and aerial transportation, free trade zones, communications and technology, earthquake reliefs, and facilitation of pilgrimage to the holy sites for the people of the two Muslim nations.

Assad had one month earlier called for the utilization of new prospects of economic cooperation and trade ties with Iran in a meeting with Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash in Damascus.

Assad emphasized that it is crucial to translate the depth of the political relationship between Syria and Iran into the economic domain. He also stated that both governments need to find ways to increase their growth.

Raeisi's visit was the first one to take place between two Iranian and Syrian officials in that capacity since the start of the foreign-backed violence in 2011.
