US-South Korea alliance draws criticism in Seoul

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol visited the White House in Washington for a summit Wednesday with US President Joe Biden.

The two celebrated the 70th anniversary of the US-South Korea alliance, and discussed responses to North Korea's nuclear and missile development, to which the US leader issued a warning.

President Yoon has sought to strengthen the alliance with the US to include a stronger commitment to extended deterrence- the US so-called nuclear umbrella, and the regular deployment of US strategic assets- weapons which can deliver a nuclear strike.

Under the new policy, US nuclear submarines will make port calls in South Korea for the first time in 40 years.

New US-South Korea military alliance activities were outlined with the summit communique, the Washington Declaration, which describes a Nuclear Consultative Group, to coordinate responses to North Korea's nuclear and missile development.

Meanwhile, peace activist leaders rallied in front of the presidential office in Seoul. They contend such aggressive US-South Korea policies, and resumed large scale joined military drills- only increase tension.

With Washington's blessing President Yoon has also moved to participate in a trilateral alliance with Japan and the US, despite widespread public opposition.
